Winter and the Congestive Season: 5 Counteracting Things That You Can Do

My granddaughter is sitting on my lap as I listen to her noisy breathing and congested cough and I began thinking about how congestion is played out in our energy physiology  The energy pattern of the winter season is Kapha, the season of congestion  All the qualities pertaining to this energy are played out in various ways 

So heavy, cool, slow/dull, slimy/smooth, oily(unctuous), liquid, dense, soft, hard, gross, static, and cloudy get expressed during the winter season  So when I listen to the congested breathing, I'm witnessing the slow/dull, slimy/smooth(ie snot), liquid, gross, and static qualities being expressed in the airways of the baby

As a matter of fact, the common cold is first an energetic imbalance and then organisms visit the mucous and what was first an energetic imbalance becomes an inflammatory process with organisms secondarily

Qualities: Sensations From the Energy Field

When we experience these qualities in ourselves or see them expressed in others it opens up new doors of understanding about what's happening in our energy bodies  This gives us an opportunity to realize that not all congestion is an infection but rather the play of energy qualities being expressed as sensations

And congestion is much broader in its physiologic application  For example, congestion in organ systems such as the prostate lead to benign enlargement of the prostate and difficulty urinating

Congestion in joints leads to arthritic symptoms, often with the complaint of bogginess in joint space You see, this congestion is a result of too much mucous, as in the prostate, in the joints  This morning I was talking with my best friend from high school days and he was relating how it had become so difficult for him to shed pounds now that he is older. Now he was a big guy, a Kapha Pitta energetically, and struggling with congestion

Yes, congestion in the energy physiology is played out in the overweight state. So we see from an energy perspective the simple concept of imblalance in the form of congestion can have far reaching consequences  And the winter time can be where we can accelerate the accumulation of the qualities leading to the congestive problems

Countering Congestion of the Winter Season

So we can use this information of qualities to reduce the chances of buildup of the qualities during the winter months, that is, become more balanced during the winter season so we avoid the problems of congestive release(common cold) or the release later next year called the spring cold  

In the energy science of Ayurveda as in the Oriental tradition disharmony or imbalance is treated by the opposite quality  So if the environment of winter is heavy, cool, slow/dull,  liquid,  soft, gross, static, and cloudy then using qualities that are opposite to them would  With this in mind, what could we do to counter these environmental qualities that become us

1 The cold season is the best time for warm foods that are nourishing  The winter is depleting to our energy so taking steps to build ourselves up  Our digestion is strong during the winter months so we can take advantage of this by using foods that are building such as dairy, grains, and nuts

2 Exercise, outside or inside is important during the winter due to the heavy, slow/dull, and static (immobile) quality of winter

3  Getting up early before 6-7am is helpful to get the day started and not take on the static energy of winter

4 Emphasizing light foods such as salads and avoiding consumption of heavy foods such as meat and wheat, and oily foods such as yogurt(particularly store bought)

5  Taking care of digestive strengh or agni is always important but particularly during the cold winter months by using ginger, fresh lime, and salt to help stoke the enzyme system of the gut  Eating in moderation(what you can hold in 2 hands) will not overtax your digestive strength

These tips will help with the winter congestive season and make your holidays more enjoyable

The Origin of Disease

Radiant ManIf we are to begin helping people prevent disease, it will have to come from an energy field discipline since it is at the energy field level where all disease begins  As we have written earlier, Hippocrates, said to be one of the four fathers of Western medicine, stated that, "All disease begins in the gut."

In other words we must reassess our understanding of the origins of disease  Presently the matter field medical discipline of which I am a practitioner, looks for molecular reasons why disease occurs But the matter field is actually developed from the underlying energy field and diseases that are created in the energy field percolate up into the matter field as expressions of the underlying energy field imbalance

Matter Science Prevention of Disease

Currently there is a great deal of information written about the molecular aspects of foods and how they bring about health  Which are the best foods for omega 3 and 9 fatty acids?  Is silica a player in loss of bone density and if so what foods are best for that molecule?  Which foods promote an antiinflammatory effect?  

All of these questions have an underlying thread, "If I understand the molecules of food, then I can effect the molecules of disease"  And this molecular approach is not a bad place to start to prevent disease  It makes complete sense from the matter science or molecular approach to disease

Chemical formlaCurrently our present matter field medical discipline provides a system of early disease detection and treatment We attempt to detect prostate cancer in its earliest stages using PSA and the prostate exam Using mammography we try to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages and cervical cancer by PAP smear By the use of sophisticated imaging we uncover unsuspected cancers in their earliest stages. For example, renal cancers are being found as small unsuspected lesions
But as you're aware this is not prevention of say, the small unsuspected renal cancer but simply early detection  But early detection is not prevention

The Behind the Scenes Energy Field

Molecules are reassuringly real  One can measure them and detect their presence in health and disease  That's where we are in our understanding of disease

But what if I were to tell you that you are both a matter and an energy field  That you coexist as both a molecular and energy field?  That you are simultaneously composed of both energy as well as  molecules?

The ancient health sciences were energy science disciplines  So the energy science of Ayurveda and the Traditional Oriental Medicine discipline state that you are an energy field and they articulate how you can describe yourself as energy field and tell you why disease occurs

So when Hippocrates said, "All disease begins in the gut", he was not speaking metaphorically but as an Hippocratesenergy scientist  He was recognizing a basic tenet of energy science nutrition and the key to prevention of disease  Due to the limitations of our molecular model and not understanding the biological simultaneity of the matter and energy we cannot grasp how real prevention of disease can occur

The Incomplete Molecular Approach

But now we can see that all these mentioned cancers had their earliest origins in the energy field and gradually the imbalances in the energy field became disruptive enough to show as an early cancer

The question is, "Is early detection the same as prevention of disease?" The answer is obviously no  And the present matter(molecular) field medical discipline will not be able to deliver disease prevention because it's detection devices operate at the level of the matter field which cannot detect the origins of disease 

If you are really interested in dealing with prevention, it will not happen for you by taking yet another supplement  or eating molecularly the right kind of foods  We have become so mesmerized by food molecules that we cannot see beyond them  And this molecular work is not wrong  It's just incomplete

The biological coexistence of matter and energy allows us to see that disease first begins its expression in the energy field but is not detectable in the matter field until an obvious disruption in the matter field can be detected by our gross studies

Digestive Fire and Detoxification

Most of us have gone without food for one reason or another and experienced a very strong appetite as a result. Seems pretty straight forward and healthy, doesn't it?   Don't eat and you get hungry.

But let's examine this process from an energy science medical model view.   What happens from an biologic energy field perspective?

As you volitionally go without food for a period of time, the enzyme system of the gut(including the bacteria of the gut) collectively known as the digestive fire, ramps up since it is not being used by food. This creates increasing appetite since the energy field's transformative energy is increasing and appetite is an expression of the health of the mindbody's fire in the gut and how it deals with nourishment given to it.

But if you continue this process withholding food for several days, something very interesting occurs energetically. Since the fire is not being fed fuel(food), it begins to lessen in its intensity. This is similar to what happens with a campfire, right? If we don't feed the campfire any more wood, what happens? The fire becomes a glowing set of embers. Very hot but not the same kind of fire.

The embers of a campfire is analogous to the detoxification fire that begins the slow burning of undigested stagnant energy in the mindbody. In reality these islands of stagnant energy get heated up so that they can begin moving again and restore the free flow of energy in the physiology once again.

Milk: The Complete Food But Even More

Perhaps not but it is a common experience shared by many  And it has some interesting observations that we can make

First it occurs within minutes after the ingestion, far sooner than the molecules of milk can even be digested How can that be? From an energy viewpoint it's because complex vibrational frequency called taste has an immediate energetic field effect

In energy field lingo the entire field feels milk all at once without necessarily digesting the molecules even though we know that occurs The digestion of milk begins when we taste milk

But it's not just milk. It's everything we taste just like our whole energy mindbody takes in the violent scene at the movies with the resultant physiologic consequences such as fear, anger, light sweating, or a gut wrenching sensation

Secondly why does milk cause mucous but horseradish has seemingly the opposite immediate effect? The answer to that lies in the vibrational frequencies that make up the taste of these foods. Milk is sweet and carries the frequencies of cold, heavy, static, slow, soft, oily, slimy/smooth, liquid, and gross.'

Horseradish is pungent carrying the qualities of hot, light, mobile, sharp/penetrating, dry, rough, and subtle

The Complete Food

Mother's milk is the complete food and is why you could subsist on this food alone when you were a growing infant  The reason for this is that milk has all 6 tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent   If all of these tastes are present then the meal and your body are complete in terms of nourishment 

But then if milk is so great why are so many "allergic" to it  The answer lies in poor digestive strength   There is often the trend to blame foods for our problems  In reality foods just are  It 's us that have the problem in terms of their digestion  Now admittedly there are true reactions to the milk sugar  lactose  or the protein casein but by and large the problems of allergies lies in the way the milk is prepared and how it's taken

But Even More

Milk can serve as a taxicab, taking herbs to the deeper tissues  For example, if you want to ensure that the calcium supplement that you're taking for your osteoporosis makes it to the bones use warm milk to swig down your supplements

But what there's more  Milk gives us ghee or clarified butter  Ghee changes from the qualities that are described in milk and mimics the qualities of the digestive fire or enzyme system that digest, absorbs, and assimilates the food you take in  So ghee is a digestant as well and helps over time to stoke your own digestive fire

But ghee can also be a taxicab taking herbs to the deeper tissues such as the above mentioned bone  So if you want to use kaishore gugglu for the health of your bones you can use ghee and it will carry the herb to the bones within 24 hours  Better yet use manduka honey with it in equal amounts and you can get a catalytic effect at the tissue level to enhance the utilization of the kaishore guggulu

So you can see why cow's milk is such a precious product on the planet, giving us not only nourishment but effective medicinal carriers for the herbs that we take
