Disease and the Microbiome
In the last blog we discussed the role of the common probiotics in today's marketplace by way of the handout offered to subscribers on request These common probiotics are regarded bacteriologically as aerobes However there are 2 other prominent players in the microbiome Today we introduce the second player, the faculatative anaerobe which plays a bigger role in the microbiome than those that are currently marketed as aerobes seen in yogurt and probiotic pills
The reason these organisms play such an important role in the are microbiome is that they create an enormous mass of cell growth that crowd out bad actors such as Clostridia and Candida keeping them in modest numbers When the numbers become imbalanced the agni becomes imbalanced
From an AY perspective agni is central to the disease process If one has a balanced agni then physiologic dis-ease cannot occur Due to our choices around diet(ahara), lifestyle(vihara) and medicines/supplements(dravya) gunas or qualities of the doshas of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha produce disturbance of the agni. The net result of this agni disturbance is the production of toxic load(ama) which clogs the energy channels and over time becomes hot(amavisha). This toxic load clogs the channels leading to blockage of energy which leads to pain in the body
So the essence of treating physiologic dis-ease of any type is to restore balance to a disturbed agni. This takes time because there has to be a gradual release of the dosha qualities and the gradual elimination of stored up ama/amavisha or toxic load in the energy channels.
An aspect of agni in the physiology is represented by the gut microbiome(gut bacterial flora). Although agni has a pervasive physiologic impact throughout the entire mindbody, a healthy microbiome in the gut provides immense support to the mindbody’s health.
The first step in providing support to the gut agni is to alter the diet to one that is alkalanizing as we have discussed in the past with the green composite protein recipe. The second step is to begin to restore the microbiome with “good guys” and overwhelm the growth of the “bad guys”.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the Microbiome
From previous blogs the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, chronic prostatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, anf vulvodynia) is a neuropathy that stems from an imbalance in the agni of the colon specifically the rectosigmoid and rectum. This leads to an energetic imbalance in the colon leading to an imbalance in the pelvic nerves
This toxic load clogs the channels leading to blockage of energy which leads to pain in the pelvic organs, namely the bladder, vagina, prostate, and rectum.
So the essence of treating physiologic dis-ease of any type is to restore balance to a disturbed agni. This takes time because there has to be a gradual release of the dosha qualities and the gradual elimination of stored up ama/amavisha or toxic load in the energy channels.

Five Ways to Improve Health
Agni or digestive power is an unknown concept in the West yet it is central to how disease occurs in Ayurveda How agni is described metaphorically is like a campfire It it's strong it burns wood to fine dust but if not the wood burns to charred debris The agni not being up to par will leave undigested unprocessed food that the energy science calls which Ama is the beginning of the disease process according to Ayurveda So we can see how agni is so important in the disease process...a fact that is completely unknown in the West
Agni becomes abnormal when it is either too hot or too cold It seems strange that agni can be too hot but it metaphorically is like a hot pot on the stove but the water or agni in the pot is ice cold....so the agni acts hot but functionally it is not effective
Clinically it looks like this....very strong appetite but once in the gut the digestion is not up to par and leaves charred undigested remains or ama So when our appetite is too strong it doesn't mean good things
How to Get Agni Healthy Again
1 Use Green Composite Protein Recipe....write if you would like to know how to do it
2 Snacking ruins digestive power....so dont do it
3 Avoid incompatible food combinations ...fruit with other food etc
4 Use homemade yogurt as a probiotic and pappadam as a prebiotic
5 Don't overeat....noon meal biggest meal of the day....should be 2 handfuls

Energy Science Cookbook
Can it be that the current dietary recommendations by our nutritional gurus are actually making us sicker? I believe this is the case.
If our current system of nutritional recommendations is so hot, why do we see people such as Oprah struggling with weight control along with millions of others?
Time to re-evaluate, eh? There is no question that our molecular prowess has given us important information but the molecular scheme is outmoded for our biological understanding in the 21st century.
Can inappropriate and indiscriminate supplements make us sick? You bet.
So what's a confused and bewildered consumer supposed to do? Try an energy science approach to not only nutrition but to healing. Now that's empowerment.
Here's a list that should be part of a nutritional system. Notice I said system, I didnt say molecules.
Get this Ayurvedic Cookbook....you won't be disappointed http://goo.gl/wiP0qO
In the book you'll find great guidance on how to begin eating healthy from an energy science perspective
Establish a balanced healthy digestive fire
Monitor bowel function and establish healthy patterns
Avoiding incompatible food combinations
Establish healthy rituals around nutrition
This is an energy science approach to nutrition. It requires a paradigm shift from our molecular matter science approach. As has been said, "How's it workin' for ya?", perhaps provides some impetus.

Food and Imbalance
Foods can create unarguable imbalances in the physiology which over time leads to disease And for the most part some of food's effects may not be associated with ill feeling
However my point is that all foods have the potential for creating imbalances in the mindbody if they don't resonate with our energy makeup Because of different factors these imbalancing choices don't give us symptoms
Feeling Bad After Eating
Haven't we all had the experience of eating a meal and not feeling well afterward? Sometimes we attribute it to food poisoning which might be the case but most of the time it is a physiologic consequence that defies an easy explanation.
From an energy science perspective the reason is imbalance. The vibrational frequencies consumed have created an obvious dis-ease in the physiology. When we eat a hot spicy meal, sometimes the result is heartburn. There is a chemical burning in the stomach experienced near the heart we call heartburn or acid indigestion. This increased acidity in the stomach is a result of the increased vibrational frequency of hot among other vibrational frequencies.
But what if we can't associate something eaten with feeling bad after a meal? Does that mean that there isn't a imbalance of vibrational frequencies? From an energy perspective, the answer would be that an imbalance or an increase of specific vibrational frequencies have accumulated and are causing obvious dis-ease.
The Salt Story
Salt-written-on-spilled-saltLet's take an example of the complex vibrational frequency of salt. If we ingested three tablespoons of salt, there would be clearly physiologic consequences or imbalance. We would become very thirsty, our blood pressure would transiently rise, our saliva would increase and we would urinate more frequently. Hot sensations would occur with flushing and acid indigestion might occur. Since the salty taste has a laxative effect, it might stimulate a bowel movement. So all of these changes occur in the body because of the consequence of excess salt.
If these changes can occur with excess salt, why couldn't simple ingestion of salt lead to imbalances if preexisting imbalances possibly already exist? From an energy perspective this is one of the reasons why food can produce physiologic consequences of imbalance soon after eating.
Basically we should never ignore a message from the body telling us of distress even though we can't explain it. And the most frequent explanation of the dis-ease in the mindbody is a result of imbalancing choices that we make through our nutritional choices.
The Energy Science View of Disease
From an energy science view all disease begins in the gut so you can see why it's so important to eat according to our mindbody energy makeup even though you may feel OK Or do you?

Dietary Monotony
How about a technique to reduce calories, feel good, feel calmer, and maybe keep in touch with your weight?
Sound too good to be true? Then read on
Personal Experience
Over the years I've experienced different forms of the same food day in and day Some people call it fasting, some would just label it a monodiet
It can be done with juices, fruit, or just a simple vegetable dish that we've written about in the past And it can be done over a few days or weeks or even longer
The point is that it's the same Maybe a different type of fruit or juice based on my mindbody makeup, but it's still fruit or juice maybe the same vegetable dish but a different types of vegetables
Now my personal observation that I've had with this type of fasting or monodiet is that it's not monotonous
Monotony is a Product of the Mind
From an energy science medical view the Vata energy pattern is that of movement Anything that has to do with movement in the physiology is Vata energy and primarily expressed in the nervous system So a turbulent mind is a Vata aggravated mind Too many thoughts to process, too many emotions to deal with, too little time to accomplish everything
To say that always having the same foods all the time is boring is simply an agitated mind
And one of the simplest ways to calm the Vata aggravated mind is monotony Samo samo
Think about it How hectic would life become if you had to look for your toothbrush, purse or wallet, and carkeys everyday? Life would become quickly frenetic and inefficient
Furthermore the mindbody loves habitual living It's comfortable, less stressful And in the end I believe we often eat this way anyway People have their favorite dishes and the routine of eating the same "comfort foods"
Research Supported Nutritional Monotony
Now in the August 2011 American Journal of Nutrition, matter science researchers report on a study where people subjected to the same diets over and over again were observed to consume less calories
And as a opposite to this was a study showing recently that with increased variety at buffets can lead to increased caloric intake!
A matter science observation (measurement of reduced caloric intake) has been made but from an energy science nutritional view the explanation is that this form of monodiet(loosely called fasting here) is Vata pacifying, that is, it creates more physiologic calming which in turns less food intake
Not because it's boring but because the monodiet is calming
