Social Media and Energy Science

Bigstock_Social_Media_Network_8029557At times I like to expose the energy science nutrition concepts at work amidst us that we wouldn't otherwise identify and recognize

Right now we are engaged in social media as it's called We as a collective group of readers interested in the topic of energy science nutrition, have convened in this space At times we access Facebook to catch up, other times with Twitter, and still others with LinkedIn

Since the energy patterns of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are universal, we know they are expressed all around us and are seen as the social media we use

Facebook is an expression of Vata energy, that of mobility and lightness, both characteristics of fun and social interactions

Twitter is an expression of Pitta energy, that of sharp/penetrating, hot, and liquid, so bonding but much more intellectualizing and trying to figure things out

Lastly, LinkedIn, an expression of Kapha energy exudes stabile, grounded discussion groups, much more formalized than its prior counterparts due to static, liquid , and dense qualities

And there are companies that are Vata, Pitta, or Kapha Entrepreneurial companies or "start ups" are creative businesses making a go at it with a new product and are Vata expressions of that creative force in Nature

Pitta companies are established companies that are transfroming the world around them such as drbilldean.com

And Kapha companies are longstanding staid companies such as Microsoft

Can you think of expressions of companies that are that of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha? Do you have a pet and what kind of expression of energy does it exude? What energy expression are you biologically(hint: take the test at foodsheal.com)?

Pain

Bigstock_Parents_Fight_Son_Suffers_4562487
At times in our lives we all must experience pain, sometimes physical, oftentimes emotional The pain can be turned inward, called guilt, or outward, that we call blame, shame, etc Remember that emotion is a  thought with a physical sensation in the mindbody

But the essence of pain is how can we deal with it in a healthy way?

And we might ask, "What does this have to do with nutrition?"

Well, everything Because emotional unresolved pain leads to emotional eating behaviors, such as bullemia, anorexia, binge eating, overeating, etc

So first of all is to recognize that emotional pain, even though it seems so real, is actually a creation of the mind An experience brings on the pain; a yet unresolved, poorly understood childhood experience, death of a loved one, a seeming violation of trust by someone near us, an unfair attack by a long term relationship, loss of trust by those who once trusted us, and many more, all experiences that the mind believes is pain

Because it seems so real, we tend to believe it's pain, but in reality, it's not It's just an experience that our wounded ego now labels emotionally as pain

Our ego needs approval, control and power If we lose approval, control or power in our relationships, if emotionally deep enough, it will be called pain by the mindbody and it will palpably visceral

Our natural response to such emotional pain is fear This leads to anger(fight), run away(flight), and inertia(deer in the headlights), get even, tell the world, and many variations of these themes

I would suggest a fourth response – simply observe our mindbodies without reaction This is obviously for most impossible, but I believe the only real way to eliminate the toxicity and damage to our mindbody physiology

So to that end my friends, here's some ways to help shed our emotional pain and avoid the nutritional consequences

1  Journal about the pain like I'm doing here

2 After you're clear about the emotional pain, talk to someone about it Get it off your chest so to speak without judgement, criticism, condemning

3 Shed as quickly as possible, anger, running away, and inertia

4 Get in touch where you are feeling the visceral pain and observe it

5 Be aware of when this pain might induce nutritional behaviors eg overeating, binge eating, not eating

6 The degree of pain although seeming very real is how much we make it and how much power we give it

Have you ever experienced a difficult emotional pain? Do you think you have successfully cleared it? Do you think it may have led to a period of aberrant eating patterns subconsciously?

Developing Mindfulness

Bigstock_Freedom_4019374
I think we have all had the experience of being so engrossed or better, consumed in an activity we don't hear people talking to us Happens actually more as kids That's being mindful

Mindfulness doesn't ascribe mental activity involving thought although the word might imply that

Actually it is quietly paying attention It engages one in witnessing, not thinking, but observing

So how do we become more mindful, witnessing, observing, not thinking which are all the same thing? One of the ways is meditation which helps reduce thought activity Another is yoga nidra that can help channel energy in a certain direction

But today we're going to talk about how to engage in mindfulness during daily activity through the use of the breath, linking it to our body and its movement

When we inhale we go slightly back toward the heels, knees bend slightly, the torso moves upward, arms bend slightly, wrists rotate outward, shoulders go back but stay down, neck stretches upward

Now you try it And see if you can hear the breath move in and out when you breathe

When we exhale our chin bends forward, shoulders stay down, abdomen goes back toward the spine, we feel a subtle elevation of the anal canal, legs straighten, and weight shifts to the balls of the feet

Now you try it

This is an exercise that creates mindfulness but of what? Becoming aware of the breath and how it moves us

It takes practice but doing it during the day when thinking about a kajillion things over time will promote a quiet alert witnessing mindbody

What does this have to do with nutrition? Everything Because when we can become aware of what we are doing our digestion improves Remember if we pay better attention to what we are doing, we do it better

How long does this take to develop this mindfulness? Six weeks! And it will make all the difference

Have you ever tried breathing mindfully? Did you sense the breath moving the body? Did you find some settling of the mind?

Biggest Meal At Noon

Bigstock_Time_1192604

Have we ever noticed that the mindbody is naturally ready for the experience of food at noon if we don't park an excess of food in the morning hours?

"Well yea, that's pretty elementary"

Let's look at this from an energy science nutritional view to understand why

The energy pattern of transformation is most prominent in the environment and therefore in our energy physiologies between 10am and 2pm

Therefore it makes sense that by energy science guidelines that we would want to take in our biggest meal of the day to take advantage of this energetic opportunity

Doing so on a regular basis helps stablilize our digestive system and the mindbody begins to fall into a regimen of "healthy"eating(health here meaning "having an integrating influence on the mind, body, and consciousness")

Here are some reasons why the noon meal is so important

1 Consuming our main meal at noon helps us reduce the amount of food eaten at night

2 At times by eating a large meal at noon reduces our need to eat at night at all

3 Eating at noon improves our ability to digest "mistakes" – those foods that we shouldn't be eating anyway(eg, beef for PK, tomato/corn for PV) or poor food combinations

4 Begins to amplify a normal mindbody bowel  pattern schedule

5 Sets up a predictive eating ritual for the mindbody and the mindbody loves regimen
